The anise is a great option for the Lowocuntry landscape, commonly used in two varieties: the Florida Sunshine Anise and the Florida Red Anise.

The anise is a great shrub for partial to full shade, in a moist area of your landscape. . Its natural environment is in the understory along streams and in rich, wooded areas. The anise can be pruned and trained into most shapes and desired uses (hedge, small tree, large shrub, shrub border, accent plant). The anise is typically pest and deer tolerant.

Florida Red Anise

  • Dark green, tough leaves that are 4-5 inches in length

  • Evergreen

  • High aromatic when crushed (licorice smell)

  • Small red flowers, blooming in the springtime

  • Native along Gulf Coast

Florida Sunshine Anise

  • Golden to yellow leaves

  • Evergreen

  • Brightens wet, woodland, or shady areas

Fertilize in the Spring each year. Add organic matter to the soil where anise are planted will ensure growth (specifically if you have sandy or clay soil).
