What does top dressing do?

Topdressing is the process of applying compost, soil, or sand over the surface of your lawn. Good soil is living soil. That may sound like a cliché, but it's true. One tablespoon of soil can contain billions of microorganisms. These microscopic organisms are one of the reasons we have plants and trees. In nature, soil microbes enrich the soil by converting fallen leaves, limbs, and other debris into nutrients, which plants use. Topdressing is simply a way of restoring nature’s balance to our landscape’s soil and increasing soil flora.

The ingredients of the organic topdressing mix applied here at Coastal Shores are:

  • 55% aged pine bark

  • 30% Farmer D Biodynamic Compost

  • composted cotton gin waste

  • composted pine peelings

  • chicken litter

  • composted green waste

  • peat humus

  • granite dust

  • biodynamic preparations: processed yarrow, chamomile, nettle, oak bark, dandelion, valerian, and horsetail herb

  • 10% topsoil

  • 5% sand
