Is water causing problems in my lawn?

How water moves or doesn’t move off of your property can have a negative impact on your landscape. Below are a few possible problems caused by poor water management and possible solutions. Problems that are caused by poor water management can quickly spread across your entire landscape, if not addressed.

Problems
Poor Soil: Clay soil will not absorb water. Water collects on top of the ground and rots grass and drowns plants.
Shady Areas: These areas tend to stay wet and will produce a fungus that can quickly spread.
Slope: During heavy rains large volumes of water shears across your lawn and landscape beds. This will washout grass and plant roots, as well as, washing your mulch out of your landscape beds.
Low Areas: Low areas will hold water and cause root rot and fungus.
Irrigation: Improper watering will provide excess water to a landscape.

Solutions
Gutters: Gutters allow you to capture rainwater and direct it to areas that will not harm your landscape.
Grading: Fill low areas with soil and ensure all landscape areas have a slight slope.
Down Spouts: Connect downspouts to underground drainage pipes. Extend the pipes to curbs, or lagoons.
French Drains: French drains use stone to help capture and absorb water.
Catch Basins: These basins collect water in a low area and move it, through pipes, to a more appropriate area.
Irrigation: It's time to turn on your irrigation systems if you have not already done so. A proper watering schedule can save you money, and it's essential for maintaining a healthy landscape. Let us know if you need our assistance with setting up your system.
Eliminate: Turn shady grass areas into landscape beds, or limb up / remove trees to let more light in.

Virtually all properties in the Low Country have at least one of the above problems. Many times it takes a combination, of the above solutions, to effectively manage the water your property collects. Coastal Shores can help you identify problem areas and present solutions.
